Diet after reduction of the submandibular gland

Autor: MUDr. Radek Lhotský

During neck surgery, which I usually perform using the Deep plane technique, we remove various parts of the neck that increase its volume and form a double chin. In addition to fat, the double chin is also caused by the submandibular salivary gland, which hypertrophies and descends.

It is a paired organ on the side of the neck, it produces saliva, it can be too low on the neck and cause a lump under the skin. It is possible to partially resect it, i.e. remove part of it without affecting the function, and thanks to this, a sharper contour of the neck is achieved.

After its reduction, it is important to follow a special diet for 2 weeks. This diet is bland, rather moist, without additives that increase saliva production and includes:

Non-salty, non-spicy, non-acidic, non-dry food.

Anything too spicy can stimulate the glands to produce saliva during the healing phase. Too much saliva can cause the formation of a so-called sialoma or a collection of saliva in the neck area.

Diet examples:

  • clean rice
  • chicken
  • eggs
  • yoghurt
  • mashed potatoes
  • stew

Examples of what to avoid

  • orange juice
  • sour candies
  • salty chips
  • spicy chicken wings
  • alcohol
  • coffee
